Balancing Health: Eight Strategies for Firefighters in the Office

Most of us will find ourselves “on days” as a fire service administrator or on extended light duty assignment at some point in our careers. These are amazing opportunities to support firefighters while moving the organization forward. However, these roles are not without their challenges.

Many administrators give all they have to the position, often at the expense of their own health. Common pitfalls include weight gain, isolation, mood swings, burnout, and more.

Having recently completed ten years in the Training Division, I am now back in Operations as a Battalion Chief. Reflecting on my time as a fire service administrator, I can honestly say it was both rewarding and extremely challenging. Staying on top of my physical fitness came naturally to me, but I sorely underestimated the stress of the job and the effects on my mental health. 

Recognizing the real and often overlooked impact of stress on mental health took me years. This journey taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and the importance of self-care. As a fire service administrator, resilience is crucial, but so is recognizing your limits, setting boundaries, and seeking support.

Here are eight strategies that helped me optimize my health in the office:
